Story behind the painting

This painting by Hawthorn’s Jermaine Miller-Lewis features in the AFL Players’ Association’s best-practice guidelines for supporting Indigenous footballers.

Miller-Lewis offered his narrative of the painting.

“That one’s got the story behind it, as a kangaroo in the middle and then the tracks. And then you’ve got the warriors, the people sitting around the outside, they look like the boomerang figures and they’ve got their spears.

“So you’ve got them travelling around the land, with the yellow and the brown background, so it’s the earthy colours. They’re travelling around hunting the kangaroo – or malu or yonga.’’
