The inaugural AFLW 22Under22 team, presented by The Diamond Guys, has been revealed with Carlton leading the way with three selections in the 2020 side.
2019 AFLW Players’ Best First Year Player Madison Prespakis, who elevated her football to another level this season and was consequently named vice-captain, said she was humbled to stand alongside the game’s most talented young players for the first iteration of the team.
“To be named vice-captain alongside two Carlton teammates and other quality young players in the AFLW is a huge honour,” she told aflplayers.com.au.
After missing the entire 2019 season with a lisfranc injury in her foot, Collingwood’s Chloe Molloy returned to her best in 2020 and was voted with an overwhelming majority as captain of the side.
The 21-year-old said she was honoured to be selected as the concept’s first AFLW skipper.
“Thank you to the fans who voted and selected me as the captain of the inaugural 22Under22 side, I am very grateful to be recognised,” she told aflplayers.com.au.
“The squad is a reflection of where the game is heading and it’s exciting to think what these 22 players will be capable of in the coming AFLW seasons.
“Congratulations to those who have made the final team. If only we could combine for a game!”
After the release of the 31-player squad, almost 1,800 team entries were created by fans across the country.
This is the first year the 22Under22 concept has been extended to the women’s competition, since its inception in the male competition in 2013.
The AFL Players’ Association’s 22Under22 is the only recognised AFL award voted by the fans.
