Despite becoming the seventh player to gather 50 disposals in an AFL match, Tom Mitchell didn’t receive best on ground honours in the 2017 Shadforth Financial Group AFLCA Champion Player of the Year Award.
Mitchell’s game against the Magpies on Saturday night divided the footy public with many believing his influence on the game was limited.
Although, the 23-year-old Hawk recruit received five votes from Alastair Clarkson and Nathan Buckley, the two coaches deemed Magpies skipper Scott Pendlebury as the best player on the night and he polled the maximum number of votes.
Having given up his lead last week to West Coast’s Elliot Yeo, Adelaide midfielder Rory Sloane has returned to the top of the leaderboard after Round 9, collecting four votes in game 150 against the Brisbane Lions while Yeo failed to poll in the Eagles’ loss to the Bombers.
Other players to poll maximum votes from Round 9 include Geelong’s Patrick Dangerfield (36 disposals, four goals), Sydney’s Dan Hannebery (30 touches, two goals), Richmond’s Alex Rance (19 disposals, 16 one-percenters) and North Melbourne’s Ben Brown (five goals).
