Hannebery crowned champion player by AFL coaches

Sydney Swans midfielder Dan Hannebery has been crowned as the 2015 AFL Coaches’ Association Champion Player of the Year.

The Swans star picked up seven votes in the final round to overcome Fremantle champion Nat Fyfe by just one vote.

The 24-year-old Swan described the award as “a massive honour.”

“You respect the coaches enormously. They’ve got really good views on the game and are extremely knowledgeable people, so you certainly respect their opinion,” Hannebery told Fox Footy’s AFL 360 on Tuesday night.

“It’s extremely humbling.”

Hannebery polled 101 votes from the 22 games he played this season on the way to his first AFL Coaches’ Association Champion Player of the Year Award.

Fyfe, who missed the last two games of the year, polled 100 votes from his 18 games. The 23-year-old Docker polled all of his votes in the first 14 rounds (13 games), averaging 7.7 votes per game out of a possible 10.

Hannebery and Fyfe are set to face off on Saturday in the qualifying final clash between Fremantle and Sydney.

Hannebery becomes the third Sydney player to win the award after Barry Hall (2005) and Adam Goodes (2006).

His final-round performance against Gold Coast included 32 disposals, five tackles and a goal.

Throughout the season, he averaged 30.3 disposals, more than five tackles a game, and kicked 14 goals for the year.

He led the AFL for total disposals, was ranked fourth for inside 50s per game, and fourth in effective disposals per game.

The 24-year-old already has an impressive list of achievements since his debut in Round 2 of the 2010 season.

He was the Rising Star winner in his first season, an All Australian in 2013, and named in the AFL Players’ Association 22Under22 team in 2012 and 2013.
