The AFL Players’ Association (AFLPA) and Torrens University Australia (TUA) are proud to announce Wayne Milera and Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera as the inaugural First Nations Education Ambassadors.
As ambassadors, the duo will elevate the importance of education for AFL and AFLW players during and post their football careers to ensure they’re setting themselves up for a successful transition into life after playing.
Further education is crucial for current and past athletes and provides critical skills and opportunities in order for them to thrive beyond their sports.
Four years into their partnership, the AFLPA and TUA are committed to the academic and professional development of AFL and AFLW players. Since 2020, this collaboration has resulted in more than 100 enrolments from AFLPA members in TUA courses.
Milera, who is pursuing a Graduate Certificate of Business Administration, is eager to explore opportunities in the business sector post-football.
Speaking to his long-term goals, the proud Gunditjmara and Narangga man said: “Ultimately, I want the best for my community and would love to see more Indigenous people in senior roles within businesses and organisations, as well as football.”
Alongside his role in Adelaide’s leadership group, Milera has been a valuable member of the Crows’ Indigenous Advisory Board and Reconciliation Action Plan Committee.
Wanganeen-Milera said he’s thankful for the opportunity: “I’m very much enjoying studying TUA’s Bachelor of Business (Sports Management) and developing my skills outside of footy.”
“I’d love to one day explore a leadership position within the Indigenous community and use what I’ve learned to coach and mentor Indigenous youth.”
The proud Kokatha and Narangga man is a role model and mentor for the Tjindu Foundation, which works to create positive and long-term change for Indigenous children across South Australia through cultural education.
AFLPA Acting CEO Regan Bunny said: “It’s imperative we continue to support and celebrate the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players who make our game great.
“It’s equally important that we invest in providing development opportunities for our members so they can grow as people and as professionals away from the field.
“Wayne and Nasiah are incredibly deserving of this opportunity, and we’re thrilled this partnership is helping them on their journeys. We’d like to thank Torrens University Australia for their continued support and helping create opportunities for our members.”
