AFL Players are used to building muscle, but through a series of new courses its CVs and networks getting the workout.

Through a series of workshops run by the AFL Players’ Association they are equipped with the tools to build a life after football

The first workshop, ‘CV Masterclass’, is focused on developing a clear and comprehensive document that will assist players in future employment.

The second workshop, ‘Activating your networks’, is focused on the significance of networking and how players can utilize their contacts for future use.

Player Development Regional Manager Marissa Fillipou said the courses were developed to fill a gap in education for players when it came to career-based skills.

“We identified a gap in our servicing in relation to vocational skills and personal skills. The players felt like they needed some information on networking skills and developing a CV,” she said.

Fillipou spoke of the unique opportunity AFL footballers have to meet and network with people from all industries; the workshops focus on maximizing these opportunities.

“Leaving football at thirty, they still have a huge part of their professional careers ahead of them, we are aiming to help them understand what they can offer to various industries.

A major aim of the AFL Players’ Association Player Development arm is teaching players to plan their futures at the beginning of their careers to help with the transition out of the game and into the workforce.

The workshops have been developed by the Players’ Association in conjunction with Inspired Heads and will be free of charge to all players.
