With one match between them and a historic Grand Final appearance, Port Adelaide’s youngsters have dominated the 2024 AFL Player’s Association’s 22Under22 team, presented by Torrens University Australia.
The Power had more players represented than any other club, with Amelie Borg, Abbey Dowrick, Matilda Scholz and Julia Teakle making the final cut. Borg, Dowrick and Teakle make their maiden 22Under22 appearance, while Scholz secured her second selection.
Continuing the South Australian affair, Adelaide closely followed their cross-town rivals with three players selected – Teah Charlton, Sarah Goodwin and Zoe Prowse. This is Charlton’s second year in the team, while Goodwin and Prowse make their 22Under22 debut.
Geelong star Georgie Prespakis and Gold Coast Sun Charlie Rowbottom have joined an exclusive group of 22Under22 record holders, with both being voted into the side for the fourth time. They now equal Prespakis’ sister, Madison, and Monique Conti as the only players who have made the final team on four occasions.
After being named Vice-Captain of the team last year, Prespakis was also voted the team’s skipper for 2024, with Rowbottom named as her deputy.
A popular pick among fans, Rowbottom received the most votes of any player, appearing in 78 per cent of fans’ teams. She was closely followed by Scholz, who was chosen by 77 per cent of the public.
Fans selected the final team from an initial 44-person squad that was compiled by foundation AFLW player Kate McCarthy as Chair of Selectors, with support from the AFLPA and Champion Data.
For a player to be eligible for selection in the squad, they must be 22 and under for the entirety of the season (including Grand Final Day – November 30) and have played at least five matches throughout the season.
