A best-on-ground performance from Fremantle midfielder Kiara Bowers headlines the nominations for the AFLW MVP of the Week for Round 5, presented by Gloria Jean’s. Bowers is joined by Geelong’s Kate Darby and Adelaide’s Erin Phillips.

The first Docker to be nominated for the award in 2019, Bowers gathered 23 touches, laid a game-high 16 tackles, collected eight clearances and kicked a goal to keep the Dockers within reach of finals. After missing the first two AFLW seasons with persistent knee injuries, Bowers has relished her AFLW chance this year playing in every game since her Round 1 debut.
Returning to the Geelong side one week after being dropped, Darby was the hero for the Cats in a low-scoring affair kicking three goals including the sealer with a 50m set shot. Darby collected 15 disposals and took four marks to go with her three majors as Geelong claimed a 27-point victory against the Lions.
Adelaide co-captain Phillips continued her impressive season earning her third nomination in a row as the Crows defeated the previously unbeaten North Melbourne by 35 points. Phillips gathered 23 disposals and kicked two goals as she went head-to-head with reigning best-and-fairest winner Emma Kearney.
The AFL Players’ Association has partnered with Gloria Jean’s again in 2019 to stage the prestigious AFLW Players’ MVP Award at the end of the season, and the AFLW MVP of the Week.
Fans will get the choice to select the MVP of the Week, after three names have been put forward by the AFLPA.
